# Third-party notices Born From Space's own code is MIT licensed (see `LICENSE`). It bundles or uses the third-party work listed below. Every bundled item is public domain or under a permissive MIT/BSD-style licence. The weather data is CC BY 4.0. Keep this file when you redistribute the project. ## Summary | Component | Where | Licence | | --- | --- | --- | | Astronomy Engine 2.1.19 (`astronomy.browser.min.js`) | `vendor/astronomy-engine/`, unmodified | MIT | | d3-celestial 0.7.35 data (stars, star names, constellation lines and names, Milky Way outline) | `data/sky.json`, `data/milkyway.png`, converted | BSD 3-Clause | | Natural Earth 1:10m populated places | `data/cities.json`, converted | Public domain | | NASA SVS CGI Moon Kit (LRO), via globe.gl | `assets/moon.webp`, reprojected | NASA imagery, no copyright in the US | | Go fonts (Regular, Medium, Bold, Mono) by Bigelow & Holmes | `fonts/`, WOFF2 subsets | BSD-3-Clause style (Go font licence) | | NASA GIBS imagery (MODIS, VIIRS, Blue Marble) | loaded at run time by the visitor's browser, not stored here | NASA imagery, no copyright in the US; acknowledgement requested | | Open-Meteo historical weather (ERA5, ERA5-Land) | loaded at run time by the visitor's browser, not stored here | CC BY 4.0; free API for non-commercial use | Nothing is loaded from a CDN or a font service. The only outside requests the app makes are to NASA GIBS and Open-Meteo. ## NASA imagery (GIBS) The satellite pictures come from NASA's Global Imagery Browse Services, through its public WMTS tiles (`https://gibs.earthdata.nasa.gov/wmts/epsg4326/best/`) and, for the Blue Marble, its WMS endpoint. No account or API key is needed. NASA's data and imagery policy allows free use, and NASA asks for this acknowledgement, which the app shows under **Sources and credits**: > We acknowledge the use of imagery provided by services from NASA's Global Imagery Browse Services (GIBS), part of NASA's Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS). Products used: - MODIS Terra and Aqua Corrected Reflectance (True Color) - VIIRS Suomi NPP, NOAA-20 and NOAA-21 Corrected Reflectance (True Color) - Blue Marble: Next Generation, for dates before 24 February 2000, labelled on the card as a 2004 composite. The pictures are not altered except for scaling, and for filling gaps between one satellite's passes with another satellite's picture of the same day (the card names every satellite used). Under NASA's media guidelines the app does not use the NASA insignia or logotype, and it does not suggest that NASA endorses it. ## Weather (Open-Meteo) The day's weather comes from the [Open-Meteo Historical Weather API](https://open-meteo.com/en/docs/historical-weather-api), `https://archive-api.open-meteo.com/v1/archive`, requested by the visitor's browser with the date and the city's coordinates. - Licence: [Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/). Credit: "Weather data by Open-Meteo.com", with a link, shown in the app and printed on every card that shows weather. - Underlying data: ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalyses of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) at ECMWF. Credit: "Contains modified Copernicus Climate Change Service information". Neither the European Commission nor ECMWF is responsible for any use of this information. - Terms: Open-Meteo's free API is for non-commercial use, with fair-use limits. This project is non-commercial. A commercial deployment needs an Open-Meteo API subscription, or the weather removed. ## Astronomy Engine `vendor/astronomy-engine/astronomy.browser.min.js` comes unmodified from the `astronomy-engine@2.1.19` npm package. The licence text is also in `vendor/astronomy-engine/LICENSE`. ``` MIT License Copyright (c) 2019-2025 Don Cross Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions: The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in all copies or substantial portions of the Software. The changes are: stars cut at magnitude 6 and stored as compact arrays, proper names kept only for stars brighter than magnitude 1.6, and the Milky Way outline polygons rasterised into a blurred 720 × 360 brightness map. The original sources, as credited by d3-celestial, are: | Data | Original source | | --- | --- | | Stars (5,000+ to magnitude 6) | XHIP: An Extended Hipparcos Compilation; Anderson E., Francis C. (2012), VizieR V/137D | | Star names | IAU proper names, as compiled in d3-celestial | | Constellation lines and names | IAU constellations, lines as adapted by Olaf Frohn | | Milky Way | Milky Way Outline Catalog, José R. Vieira | ``` Copyright (c) 2015, Olaf Frohn All rights reserved. About one place in six has no time zone in the source. Those borrow the zone of the nearest place in the same country that has one. > All versions of Natural Earth raster + vector map data found on this website are in the public domain. You may use the maps in any manner, including modifying the content and design, electronic dissemination, and offset printing. > — https://www.naturalearthdata.com/about/terms-of-use/ Made with Natural Earth. Free vector and raster map data @ naturalearthdata.com. ## Moon map `assets/moon.webp` is the Moon's near side, rendered by `scripts/build_moon.py` (orthographic projection, gentle contrast, 320 × 320 WebP) from the 1024 × 512 grayscale map of NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio *CGI Moon Kit*, built from Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LROC) data. That grayscale map comes from the sister project Night Sky Live (`assets/moon.jpg`), which converted it from the copy packaged in the `moon-landing-sites` example of [globe.gl](https://github.com/vasturiano/globe.gl) (MIT licence, Copyright (c) 2019 Vasco Asturiano). NASA imagery is not copyrighted. Credit: NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio. The app draws the phase shading itself. ## Go fonts The four files in `fonts/` are Latin subsets in WOFF2 format of Go Regular, Go Medium, Go Bold and Go Mono, from `golang.org/x/image/font/gofont/ttfs`.
